Tag You’re It

A HTML header tag on your web site is one of the most important aspects in optimizing your web site. Not only is the Title tag the first item search engine spiders see, it also is important to visitors to your site. A header tag essentially works like a chapter title in a book. The word or words between and should communicate exactly what that single page is all about. If there is more information on the page, you can use thru heading tags to show hierarchical organization on the page. It is fine to have multiple to tags, but be sure to only use one on any one page of your web site.

When you are organizing your page, imagine that you're writing an outline. Each tag should be a subtopic of the tag. Don't use a hanging heading tag, either. Only use an if you have an above it, do not use an unless you have an above it, and so on. Make sure the body text in each section is relevant to the headings above it.

Each page has its own headings so the headings from the front page don't carry over to any other page. Ideally, each page of your site has a different heading that reflect its own unique content and identity to search engines.

The default Drupal theme—Garland—doesn't handle H1 tags particularly well. In fact, it assumes that the most important thing on every single page of your web site is the site name. While that might be important for your front page, it is certainly not the most important thing on every single page of your site. So, you are probably going to want to go into your site and change your title tags to optimize your site for search engines.
