Use OpenCalais to organize content

As you and other people begin to create content for your site, things might begin to get organizationally challenged. Maybe you have lots of different pages of content, but no categories to organize them. It would take days to go back and tag everything that has been created. Fortunately, for Drupalers around the globe, there is a automated solution called OpenCalais (AKA Calais) that will do the heavy lifting for you.

• OpenCalais reads the content of your nodes, as you create them, or in bulk.

• OpenCalais uses some amazing analysis to create tags for your content

• OpenCalais creates tags in your Drupal Taxonomies so you can use them to organize your content

OpenCalais is not perfect. It only tags three major types of data:

1. Named entities including people, companies, organizations, geographies, books, albums, authors, and so on.

2. Facts like position, alliance, person-education, person-political, and so on.

3. Events like sporting, management change, IPO, labor action, and so on.

If your content doesn’t discuss this kind of data very often, then OpenCalais may not be for you. To find out, try out their Document Viewer at the following link: http://viewer.opencalais.com/

Tomorrow, we will look at the specific steps to take to install OpenCalais.
